Air Itam market traders get new upgraded stalls

GEORGE TOWN: There were happy faces all round for Air Itam market traders recently when they were handed the keys to their newly upgraded stalls.
The stalls are equipped with roller shutters.

Air Itam state assemblyman Wong Hon Wai said the the first phase project for the Air Itam market has been completed.


He said the upgrading of the market began on March 15 and would finish by the end of the year.


The first phase involved 45 traders out of the 140 in the entire market.

"The completed upgrading work was at the dry and fish section.


"The state government will continue to provide a better environment for the traders and for the consumers as well," said Wong, who is also the state housing committee chairman, when presenting the keys to the traders in a simple ceremony.

Air Itam market is one of the five markets identified by the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) for upgrading works.

The others are at Lebuh Cecil, Pulau Tikus, Jelutong and Batu Maung.


The Air Itam market was built before the World War II.

Minor upgrades have been done over the years. But this round, according to Wong, major upgrades were done involving the drainage system, changing the wiring system, and rebuilding stalls with water and electricity supply. -- By Lee Keng Fatt

（檳城19日訊）一開始引來小販反彈的阿依淡巴剎提升工程，經過幾次會議協商後順利展開，如今完成第一階段工程，小販也沒有再發出不滿的聲音。
依照原本計劃，要在農曆新年前展開工程，小販需分三批遷移至臨時停車場做生意，引來小販的不滿，民政黨及馬華的協調員也插手非議。
過後阿依淡區州議員黃漢偉與檳島市政局、承包商開了6次會議，也與小販舉行3次協調會議，雙方加強溝通，工程終於在3月15日展開。
黃漢偉週四早上到巴剎巡視，並移交捲門鎖匙給干料小販。
他說，第一期工程涉及45檔包括海鮮攤販和干料小販，耗約2個月完成。
他表示曾要求承包商，施工期間以不影響小販生意為優先，而不以進度作為考量點。

料年杪完成所有工程

“耗費87萬令吉的提升工程分4階段進行，預計全部工程需至年杪才完成。目前進行第二期工程，涉及豬肉與豆腐檔。”
他表示，暫時不會調高租金，小販每個月需繳付的租金和執照費共21令吉。
出席者包括檳島市議員林清和、柏勒阿南、首長州選區助理方建明及檳市局官員。

施工沒影響生意

67歲的干料雜貨小販周鄭亞准對於新環境豎起姆指大大讚好，開心極了。
他說，承包商在他早上10點收檔後才動工，施工期間生意照做，生計不受影響， 這做法讓他非常滿意。
